When I read this sad news I really was shocked and sad.

Mike was a long time friend of mine. Mike I will miss your email, your Twitter messages, our conversations on Facebook.

R.I.P. my friend your job is done and I'm sure you are in a better world now.

Michael L. Martin, 65, of Newton died Sunday, Dec. 18, 2011, at his home in Newton.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home. The family will greet friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21, at the funeral home. Memorials in Michael’s name may be left at the funeral home.

The son of Archie and Otha Lee (Duvalle) Martin, Mike was born Nov. 5, 1946, in Moravia, Iowa. He grew up in Moravia and had lived in Newton for the past 30 years. On July 26, 1989, he was united in marriage with Sheren Logan in Des Moines.

Mike received his degree in criminology from Indian Hills and DMACC. He worked as a dispatcher in Des Moines and Newton before serving as a police officer in Monroe for 20 years. After retirement, he worked Federal Security in Des Moines post 9/11.

Mike was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 1655, Masonic Lodge, National Rifle Association, and the American Quarterhourse Association. He served his country U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He enjoyed anything electronics.

Those left to honor Mike’s memory are his wife, Sheren of Newton; children, Kelly (Bonita) Martin of Frog Bottom, Ark., Sean Martin of DeQueen, Ark., Sarah Martin of DeQueen, Ark., Brian Martin of DeQueen, Ark., Nathan Martin of Newton and Stephanie Martin of Littleton, Colo.; his mother, Otha Lee Martin of Moravia, Iowa; and sisters, Sally Johnson of Russell, Iowa, and Jane Martin of Hacienda Heights, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his father, Archie Martin.
